Two days after the U.S. midterms, the White House posted a video on X that turned President Donald Trump into a low-poly adventurer. The mock title screen, grassy field and floating fairy all point to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The caption reached further back, borrowing the line about it being dangerous to go alone from the original Zelda.
The clip used familiar game imagery to present the administration’s own talking points. What makes it worth looking at from a games perspective is how little setup the reference needs. A title screen and a fairy are enough to tell you who the video wants you to see as the hero, before a single policy claim appears.
In Zelda, you get to wander off, get lost and decide where to go next. Here, the adventure is already scripted. That gap is what makes the clip revealing: a visual language built around exploration can be repurposed to deliver a message with a predetermined ending.
Game imagery has become recognizable enough to do that work far outside games. The White House borrowing it during election week is a reminder of just how much meaning a few polygons can carry.
